Sad to say, this is my least favorite book thus far by Jenny Colgan. The Loveliest Chocolate Shop in Paris was a well-written story, the story just wasn’t for me. The beginning of the book drew me in, and I really liked the main character, but I didn’t feel much of an attachment to any of the other characters. And since this was a dual narrative, the other characters were a major component of the storyline. When I pick up a Jenny Colgan book I’m expecting a warm, funny story with a bit of conflict. This book was more poignant with one serious accident, one dying woman and a morbidly obese man. (no spoilers here…this is revealed in the beginning of the book). I didn’t want to feel sad while reading a book about a chocolate shop and Paris. Also, I was confused about a couple of significant statements that were made. I didn’t understand what was being alluded to until further along in the book. I wanted to say to Ms. Colgan..
Anyway, here’s a brief synopsis..
Anna Trent, 30, works in a chocolate factory. She has a serious accident on the job and finds herself in the hospital for several weeks. During her convalescence, Anna is reunited with her former French teacher, Claire, who’s receiving chemotherapy treatments. Anna worries about how her own life will proceed now that she can’t return to the factory, is boyfriendless, and partially disabled from her accident. Claire mentions that she used to know someone in Paris who worked in a Chocolate Shop, and she arranges for Anna to work there. Here’s where the story changes time-periods to show the connection between Claire and the owner of the chocolate shop.
I did like a few things about the book. I loved hearing about the process of making fine chocolate, and I enjoyed Anna’s character development. I wished the book was about her life alone, and not Claire’s too, because it’s what made it depressing. Claire’s breathy, wisp of a voice was harrowing sometimes. Beverley Crick, the audio narrator, did a good job portraying dying Claire’s voice. Maybe too good, because hearing it made me want to cry.
Overall, this book was just okay to me. I know this because I was getting anxious for it to end. Will I read another book by Jenny Colgan? Absolutely! I’d already purchased two others before finishing this audiobook and feel confident that I’ll enjoy them.
Thank you, Tantor Audio, for a complimentary download of this book. In exchange I have provided an honest review.
Have a great day everyone! Thanks for visiting Cozynookbks. ☺️
Oh I would have expected a much lighter read as well, based on the cover and title. Thanks for your review, I hope your next review will make you feel happier!

Thanks Inge. 🙂
Oh how I longed to hear about couples strolling together, sharing ice cream and chocolates, gazing in each other’s eyes while admiring the Eiffel Tower. Didn’t happen. 😠

I love your bitmojis and how you use them in your reviews 🙂 Sorry to hear about this one not meeting your expectations. You are right about Paris and Chocolates alluding to something warmer and not depressing. The cover made me think that this would be a fluffy read. Glad to hear that you have enjoyed the author’s other titles though 🙂

Thank you Diana. 🙂 Those Bitmojis have become like dear friends. 🙃
I was expecting warm and light and fuzzy but never did I feel that way while reading this one. I just purchased two more books by Colgan, that’s how much confidence I have in her writing, so let’s hope I have a better time reading those.

Too bad they all don’t meet our expectations. Jenny Colgan’s books are so character driven that to not connect with the characters would be a bad thing. I agree, I would still read and/or listen to others as she is a fun author. But chocolate …. that would draw me in quickly. Have a great week Laurie.

I agree with Lana, Laurie, you crack me up! I am so sorry the book didn’t work. I have a couple Jenny Colgan books here, but I haven’t read them. I don’t this is one of them. I hope you love your next book and hope your weekend is wonderful with nice weather! 😉 ♥️

Thanks Jennifer. 😂 Those Bitmoji’s so accurately reflect my personality. I’m really very silly. 😉
I’ve loved the other books I’ve read by Jenny Colgan, but this one just didn’t thrill me. You’d think Paris and all that….but I found it on the solemn side. I want to feel like smiling after reading a book, not crying!
Thanks for visiting, Jennifer. 💕 Isn’t this weather awesome??!! I heard it’s going to get hot again though. 😡

Yes, I am loving the weather, Laurie! Can’t wait for more days like this, but I guess summer has to have one last stand. Another thing in common, Laurie- I have a silly side too. I’m sure some thing it’s immature, but I like to have fun! I hope you enjoy the rest of this lovely day! ♥️

Ha, ha. Hi Jill!! The book just was not what I was expecting. Not my typical feelings about a Jenny Colgan book.
Are you really getting comments still? That’s funny. I had a blast reading others’ comments and getting their points of view. I truly enjoyed it. Thanks again, so much, for having me. 💕
😂😂 regarding my Bitmoji. I think they have a great way of making everybody look cute in cartoon form. 😊
Enjoy this lovely weather we’ve been having, but prepare for another heat wave. 🤦🏽♀️

That’s what I prefer to remember from it Laurel-Rain.
Hope you’re having a lovely Saturday. The temperature here in NC dropped to 70’s the last few days and it’s been like a new life!! Heat wave coming back though. 🤦🏽♀️

Good review. I think when you want to love a book, but don’t, that it makes the review harder to write. Any thoughts on whether you would have preferred to read the book rather than experience the audio version? I know that’s a hard question because you can’t go back in time.

Thanks Linda, and very true. You know, I did wonder about that and in this particular case I might not have stuck it out had I read the book, or I likely would have struggled through it. I took a chance with this one knowing that the setting was not in the U.K., which I prefer. I’m an Anglophile after all. But it was more the characters than anything else. I just didn’t care enough for them to want to root for them or empathize with them. If the story had been solely about the main character’s life I think I would have enjoyed it better.
I always love hearing from you. You usually have an insightful question for me. I like that. You’re such a teacher. 😉
Thx so much for stopping by. Have a wonderful weekend. 😊

I know Holly!! I was expecting to be swept away and caught up in a beautiful love story with characters I adored surrounded by silky milk chocolate. NOT! Instead I had to endure sadness and grief and a love connection that didn’t wow me. Oh well, you can’t win them all, right? 🤷🏽♀️
Have a great weekend Holly. Thx so much for stopping by. I have to check up on your posts. I’ve been under the weather but getting slowly back on track. 😉
