Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage

WARNING: MEAN, CREEPY CHILD ALERT!!

If youā€™ve ever seen the 1956 movie, The Bad Seed, the little girl in Baby Teeth is a younger version of that disturbed child, but worse!! Hannaā€™s behaviour makes it clear that thereā€™s something seriously amiss with her, but her father refuses to acknowledge it since sheā€™s all sunshine and roses when sheā€™s with him. Consequently, her motherā€™s accusations about their daughter fall on deaf ears. Sweet little Hanna couldnā€™t possibly be as bad as Suzette asserts. Or could she? Suzette is a nervous wreck, trying to find out whatā€™s wrong with Hanna. Everything she says to her daughter is taken as a personal affront, and Hanna lies in wait for the perfect opportunity to retaliate. She wants her father to herself, but has she gone too far to achieve her goal?

I was scared yā€™all. While reading Baby Teeth I had mixed emotions. But mostly I was feeling like…

Hannaā€™s devious, demented mind made me stop and ponder what Iā€™d do if I had a child like her. Sometimes I felt like shouting at Hannaā€™s mother….RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!

At other times I wondered what Suzette could have done to make her daughter feel the way she did. šŸ¤”

I enjoyed this book. It was well-written and compulsively readable. I felt intrigued, horrified, angry, compassionate and sad while reading it. I did have a couple of issues with the book. For one thing, Hannaā€™s internal dialog, at times, seemed too mature for a seven-year-old child, even a precocious one. I had to suspend disbelief to believe that she could contemplate and then execute some of the dastardly things she did. Another issue stemmed from the authorā€™s occasional use of vulgar language which was entirely unnecessary. Iā€™d be reading along happily and then BAM!, I would get hit with a vulgar word or statement and I thought, ā€œwhat just happened here?!ā€ šŸ˜” Omitting those parts would not have changed the highly satisfying quality of the book.

Overall, Baby Teeth was a very good thriller that kept me in suspense, frightened me and left me with a contented smile on my face at the end.

Many thanks to St. Martin’s Press for an ARC of Baby Teeth. All opinions about the book are honest and entirely my own.

Have a great day everyone, and thank you so much for visiting.

    • You were right Angela! šŸ˜« That little girl had some serious issues. I felt a little bad for chuckling at the ending.šŸ˜Œ

Iā€™m happy the Bitmoji reactions made you smile. Thatā€™s the intended reaction. I think most of us could use a little laughter these days.

Thanks for stopping by. Always so nice to hear from you. šŸ˜‰

  2. Wow, amazing review Laurie. I worry about the overly creepy behaviour of this little girl, but still want to read it. Knowing that Hannah is extremely precocious going in will help with the detailed and devious thoughts she has.

  3. Wow! Thanks for the warning. Definitely not my cup of tea. I have trouble shaking things like that from my brain. Iā€™ll just focus on your final pleasant picture and wish you a nice weekend. I hope you had a good vacation and that the inevitable catch up time is not too difficult.

    • Thanks Linda. If you canā€™t dismiss creepiness itā€™s better to leave this one alone.
My vacation was great, but never long enough. I think Iā€™m still playing catch-up.
You have a nice weekend too, and thanks for stopping by. ā˜ŗļø

    • Hi Kathryn. This book is not for everybody. And admittedly, itā€™s not my typical reading choice. Nevertheless, I thought it was well-written. Now back to my contemporary fiction and sweet romance reads. šŸ˜Š

  4. Great review Laurie! I had similar feelings about this book. Hanna sure was scary, some of the scenes still haunt me. I do agree though that some of her thoughts and actions were too mature. All in all, she was creepy. Glad you enjoyed this book.

    • Thanks Diana. Yes, a few scenes made me wince for sure. At times I felt like Hannaā€™s voice was too adult-like. I had to remind myself that she was only seven.
Thanks for stopping over and commenting. šŸ’•

    • Hi Laurel-Rain!! Itā€™s good to e-see you. Iā€™m trying to get back on track from vacation. šŸ¤¦šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø
I can tell you that I donā€™t think you should worry too much about the oblivious father. You do, however, need to think about the fear factor. šŸ˜©

    • šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ I did Like it Shalini. It was creepy and incomprehensible at times. How could a little girl be that evil towards her own mother? Should you get it? šŸ¤” If you like creepy characters Iā€™d say you might like this one.
Great to e-see you my funny little book buddy. šŸ˜‰
