Bring Me Back by B.A. Paris

⭐️⭐️ – 2-stars

Simply put, this book wasnt for me. I didn’t like it at all. It became a tedious cat and mouse chase and I lost interest early on. The characters, including the main ones, were all one dimensional, and there wasn’t much to imagine outside of them. No engaging secondary characters, no atmosphere, no interesting landmarks, no development. Nothing. There was just no substance. It’s like everyone and everything existed in hazy outline, and I didn’t really care about anyone or anything, except maybe the dog, Peggy. And those silly Russian Dolls. 🙄 I didn’t particularly care for how it was structured either. There was quite a bit of introspection and first person narrative. I felt like it kept going in circles. Very repititious. It picked up a bit towards the final 20% of the book, but only briefly. I was just too tired of the whole thing to care by that time anyway. I couldn’t wait for it to be over. I was hoping for a climactic ending, but alas I found it disappointing and implausible.

Here’s a brief synopsis of the plot…

Finn McQuaid’s girlfriend, Layla, goes missing during a rest room break while on their way back to Devon, England, from their trip to France. Finn is devastated, but eventually he begins to accept that Layla is gone forever and he grows attached to Layla’s sister, Ellen. In the twelfth year of Layla’s disappearance, Finn gets engaged to Ellen and when their engagement becomes public knowledge clues begin popping up to suggest that Layla might still be alive and close by.

Initially, Finn paints this blissful picture of his relationship with Layla, but then there’s this undertone of discontent and animosity that existed. What really happened the night Layla disappeared, and has she really come back?

I’m sorry. I didn’t like any of it. That is all.

I want to thank St. Martin’s Press for a complimentary copy of Bring Me Back in exchange for an honest review which I have given.

Have a wonderful week everyone.

  1. Oh I’m sorry to hear you didn’t like this one. I do feel like I’ve seen more mixed reviews on this one than previous B.A. Paris books so maybe it was a bit rushed or something. Hopefully your next read was wonderful!
PS – I saw your comment on Book Date on Jill Shalvis’ Rainy Day Friends book (or at least I think it was you – I already closed the window). You mentioned that you thought the heat level was a little high in her books and that that didn’t sound like the case with this one. It definitely isn’t. There is some heat but this series is more women’s fiction than her other series and there’s a lot more focus on emotional connections and relationships.

    • Bring Me Back makes me very hesitant to pick up another book by B.A. Paris.🙁
Yes Katherine. That was me. Thanks so much for telling me that!! Now I know that I can at least try that particular book by Jill Shalvis without the excessive heated scenes. ☺️

I wished I didn’t have to write a negative review, but I really didn’t like this one. There are mixed reviews on it. Who knows, you might like it. 🤷🏽‍♀️
      Thanks for your comment. 😊

I don’t want to spoil it for you. You might love it, but I didn’t care for it.

I have one audiobook, one e-book and one paperback going right now, and I’m enjoying all three of those so far. ☺️

      Thanks for your comment. 😊

  2. Loved your review and those completely honest statements. And the Bitmojis–perfect! I gotta go see if I can find those. Really tho, sometimes I wonder what’s wrong when I read reviews that sing the praises and then I can’t keep my eyes open. I’m getting too old to waste that much time.

    • Thank you!! It pained me to write this review. It really did. But there were just no redeeming qualities and I had to be honest. I wanted to throw the book out of the window when I was done. But I was just so glad it was over I didn’t.
Thanks for appreciating my honest review. 😊

    • Thanks Laurel-Rain. I really wanted to love it. There was so much clever marketing and hype associated with it. But I grew bored. And I found the ending totally unrealistic. Not sure if I’d attempt another book by this author any time soon. I need time to get over this one.
      Thanks for commenting. 😊

    • Thanks Diana. I really struggled through this one. I remember your review, and that you looked up the Russian Dolls. I was familiar with Russian Dolls so I wasn’t really intrigued by them as much. The ending had me like 😤.

The images are called Bitmojis. You can download the app onto your phone or tablet if you have one. They’re so much fun because I can usually find one to reflect my emotions perfectly, and I truly needed a nap after reading this one. 🤦🏽‍♀️

    • Hi Jill!! I really don’t like giving negative reviews. I truly don’t. But this one killed me. I couldn’t help it. 😔

This heat is killing me!! I was swooning away on Saturday. I hope I can get through this day without heat exhaustion. 🙏🏽 😊
Have a beautiful day Jill. 💕

    • Hi Holly!! I was happy for about the first twenty five pages and then I started getting bored. I wish the Russian dolls would have had a better effect on me. 😔
      I won’t even mention that ending. 🙄

  4. I read this book for Netgalley and it seemed like it took FOREVER to get through it. It isn’t only boring; there is just not much of a plot. This would have made a decent short story, but not a novel.
