I know I’ve loved a book when:
-The audiobook version is 13 hrs. long and I’m utterly disappointed when it ends
-I find myself chuckling throughout the day recalling random scenes
-I start researching other books by the author so I can add one to my tbr
-I stalk the author online and follow their social media posts
This is how I felt after devouring Welcome to Rosie Hopkins’s Sweetshop of Dreams. I enjoyed this book immensely. The audiobook narrator, Beverley Crick, did an outstanding job portraying the various characters, both male and female, in the book. An incredible performance. This book checked off all of the boxes that make for a thoroughly satisfying read.
And now a peek at the plot…..
Rosie Hopkins, age thirty-one, is an auxiliary nurse living in a tiny London flat with her status-quo boyfriend, Gerard, age thirty-six. She’s convinced herself that she’s satisfied with her life, but her friends and family consistently suggest otherwise. Angie, Rosie’s mother who lives in Australia, has commandeered her to move to the English countryside to care for her elderly great aunt, Lilian, who used to run a sweetshop but is no longer up for the task since a terrible fall has taken its toll on her. Rosie’s job is to transform the neglected, abandoned shop into a proper sweetshop so that it can be sold and aunt Lilian placed in a comfortable senior home to live out her days. Rosie resists with numerous excuses as to why she shouldn’t go, but after considering having the most favorable circumstances amongst all of her relatives, along with her inner desire to have a break from Gerard, acquiesces and decides to go.
Rosie eventually settles into village life with its quirky residents and beautiful landscape. She even gets the opportunity to demonstrate her adept nursing abilities on a few occasions. Subsequently, she’s beginning to feel useful in the small town of Lipton. When Gerard finally gets around to visiting, she realizes what a disappointment he really is; his idiosyncratic ways so clearly visible and pathetic when compared with the rugged men she’s met out in the country. Rosie is reevaluating her life, and just where will she end up? Can she find love and a new life in the little town of Lipton, or will she choose to return to her familiar life in London with Gerard?
I adored this book. It was so well crafted. An excellent story. The audio narrator brought it to life and I didn’t want it to end. Be warned though, there is a bit of language in this book here and there, but overall it’s a cozy, sweet read with loads of British wit and charm. Fabulous!
Thank you, Tantor Audio, for a complimentary download of Welcome to Rosie Hopkins’s Sweetshop of Dreams. In exchange I have provided an honest review.
Have a lovely week!!
This sounds like quite a beautiful read. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed it so much. I have never listened to an audio-book before. How do you do it? While driving or do you have it in the background like you would do with music?
That photo at the end is really beautiful.

Thank you Diana. I really loved this one.
You’ve really never listened to an audiobook before? I think you’d enjoy it. I LOVE it!! If the narrator is very good, and I have a list of favorites, it can be an incredible experience. I listen while cooking, unloading the dishwasher, doing regular household chores, getting dressed, driving. My Apple Watch sync’s with my iPhone, so I can rewind easily if I’ve gotten distracted and need to go back. Very convenient. Audiobooks relax me and bring books to life. I hope you decide to try one.
Thanks for commenting. Have a beautiful day!! 😊

I love that kind of audio listen! I’ve been a big fan of the last few Jenny Colgan books I’ve read and I love the idea of listening to them. I haven’t read this one but it sounds like I absolutely must!

It was just what I needed because I relished every minute of it. I think it’s worth a listen. But if you can imagine the British accent and expressions in the book, then I’m sure it will be a great read too.
Thanks for stopping by, and for your comment.

Great review. I have read a book by Jenny Colgan and enjoyed it. I am really starting to enjoy audio books. The narrator can definitely make it or break it. I am going to check this one out.

Hi Carla. I read one other book by Jenny Colgan and enjoyed it as well, but this one I liked even better. In this case the narrator really made the book for sure.

It sounds delicious and now I’m craving chocolate, but then I’m always craving chocolate! Are you tempted to try out any of the recipes?

Hi Sheila!! This Sweetshop has all sorts of candy in it, not only chocolate. Each chapter begins with an anecdote related to confections. I was so wrapped up in the story I didn’t pay enough attention to the recipes. And since I used to work for The Hershey Company once upon a time, I’ve consumed my share of chocolate and feel content just purchasing it. ☺️
But I immediately downloaded The Loveliest Chocolate Shop in Paris by the same author, so that one will likely have delectable chocolate recipes. That shows how much I loved this book.

Good review. I don’t listen to audio because I am rarely alone, but it sounds like fun. I have read a few books where I thought the expletives were necessary for the character, but I really resent it when it seems thrown in just to be able to say “see how adult/cool” this book is. If I want to listen to offensive language, there are plenty of places to go other than books I have chosen for relaxation. Maybe the British sense of humor would make up for it in this book.😉

Thanks. With this particular book I think the audiobook version really brought it to life. The audio narrator did a masterful job and I’m wondering if straight reading would have had the same effect. It would have still been good, because the book is very well written. But the expressions were so well performed I’m glad I listened.
As for the expletives. Unfortunately I’ve come to realize that it’s hard to find a book that doesn’t contain them, unless it’s Christian fiction (which I don’t read a lot of because I find many to be didactic, and I have my own beliefs and don’t use regular books for religious instruction), or a clean romance line like Harlequin Heartwarming, which I love. But these rom-coms and contemporary romance books, etc., see the need for cussing. I personally don’t like it because I don’t swear, and neither do those I keep company with, but we know that’s not the case for everyone. The book would have been splendid without even one curse word.
Thanks for your comment. 😊

It takes me forever to finish 10 hour books because I can only listen at certain times, but I do LOVE a good one. This sounds wonderful! (and love the little cottage pic)! Glad you enjoyed this one. 🙂

I know what you mean Holly. When I’m enjoying a good audiobook, my best times to listen are: when I’m in the bathroom getting dressed and doing makeup, while folding clothes, food shopping, cooking, unloading the dishwasher and driving here and there. That’s how I got through this one. The audio controls sync with my Apple watch so I can quickly start/stop/rewind when I’m moving about around the house. Very convenient.
Isn’t that cottage lovely?! I just want to jump into it and stay for a few weeks. ☺️ Have a beautiful day.

That’s what I thought too Mischenko. But then I started listening and before I knew it I was lamenting that it was nearly finished and I felt sad.
It must have been exactly the read I was craving because it made me feel all kinds of happy.
Enjoy your week too. And thanks for stopping by. 😊
