It’s the National Maple Syrup festival in South Lick, Indiana. Robbie Jordan, local chef and proprietor, holds the kickoff culinary competition in her restaurant and vintage cookware store, Pans ‘N Pancakes. One of the judges, a disagreeable Professor, Warren Connolly, suffers a choking episode, nearly turning a fun day into a disaster if not for Robbie’s beau, Abe O’Neill, who comes to the man’s rescue. Thankfully he was there since Robbie observed that those in close proximity to the professor didn’t move an inch to help him. Tragically, when said professor is found dead soon thereafter, Robbie recalls some of the instances of quarreling between Connolly and a couple of her friends and acquaintances before he met his demise. One of those acquaintances has gone missing, and Robbie’s friends are quickly moving up on the suspect list. Can Robbie find the killer and absolve her friends before she winds up toast herself?55670466-E84F-4EEF-816D-1EA4F767255DBiscuits and Slashed Browns is Book 4 in the Country Store Mystery series, and I enjoyed it. There were viable suspects and overall it was a good mystery. I chuckled at the Hoosier dialect and comical sayings, such as, “…with a lawyer stuck to him tighter than snot on a hot oven door.” LOL. I have read three of the four books in this series, and while this one was not my favorite, it’s still recommended. For the best experience I would suggest getting acquainted with the characters by starting with Book 1 in the series.

Thank you to the publisher, Kensington Books, and Netgalley, for an E-ARC of Biscuits and Slashed Browns in exchange for an honest review which I have given.

Have you read any books in this series? What did you think? Feel free to share. I warmly welcome your comments.

  1. Love your review and the pic of your backyard! ❤ I do have this book added. I love that the author came up with South Lick, Indiana which reminds me of the real town French Lick. You can tell I'm from Indiana lol. 😀

  2. Great review Laurie. I read the first two in the series and really enjoyed them. I have the third on my tablet, just finding the time to read it. I keep saying I will, then something else pops up. I also loved Killer Jam, but the next was not as good.

    • Hi Carla!! Thank you. ( :
Actually, book 3, When The Grits Hit The Fan, was my favorite of this series thus far. It was a definite 5-star read for me. I reviewed it last year.
I’ve heard that book 2 of the Dewberry Farm Mysteries wasn’t as good. I downloaded it last week and will have to read/listen at some point. I guess it would be hard to beat Killer Jam. I LOVED that book!
Thanks for your comment. I always enjoy hearing from you. 😊

  3. I have never read any cozy mysteries but I do like the sound of this. The cover is really beautiful.

ps: That pic of your backyard honestly has me speechless. It is so beautiful! We don’t have winter here.I do like photos like this.

    • You should give one a try. I enjoy this country store cozy mystery series, but if you choose this one I would suggest you start with book 1, Flipped for Murder.
A few months back I reviewed a cozy that was a Top Pick for me. It’s called Killer Jam by Karen MacInerney. It was an audiobook and I loved it. Another favorite is Lea Wait’s Mainely Needlepointers mystery series. But do your own research and choose a cozy that appeals to you. Mine are just a few suggestions. There are so many out there!!

Thank you regarding my backyard. It only snows a handful of times here during winter, but when it does it’s so beautiful. And a good book on a snowy day is just the absolute best thing. ☺️
Thanks for stopping by Diana. 😊

  4. I haven’t read many cozy mystery books, but I’d love to tap into the genre this year! Thanks for recommending that we start from the first book in the series, I don’t wanna be thrown into a story and end up feeling confused!!
The pic is stunning by the way! I love snow!!!!

    • I definitely suggest starting from the beginning with this series, Noriko. Cozies are a great go-between when you’re coming off of an emotionally intense or deeply psychological read. They’re…..🤔…..cozy. LOL! And there are SCORES of them out there. But they do differ in style and content—from cutesy to substance/depth. I prefer substance/depth personally, but you can’t go wrong either way in many cases.
Thank you!! The snow was so lovely. I’m glad I have the picture to remember it since it rarely snows here. ☺️
